What is Speedex?

Speedex is a Greek courier and express delivery company founded in 1986 as a limited liability company, recognized as the first organized private courier operator in Greece. Headquartered in Athens, the company has grown into one of the largest players in the domestic courier market processing approximately 7 million shipments per year through a network of 200 distribution centers and service points nationwide. Since December 2017, Speedex has operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Sfakianakis Group of Companies, a diversified Greek commercial conglomerate with interests across the automotive sector and broader commercial activities.

The company entered the Greek market at a time when private courier services were still a nascent segment of the domestic logistics industry. In its early years, Speedex built a strong reputation for urgent document and parcel delivery within Greece and gradually extended its workforce and infrastructure to match the growth of domestic trade. A significant milestone came in July 2001, when Speedex became the first courier company in Greece to receive ISO 9001:2008 quality certification, establishing an operational standard that was still uncommon in the Greek courier sector at that time.

Corporate ownership of Speedex evolved through several stages before settling into its current structure. In February 2000, the company became a member of the Fourlis Group, one of the largest Greek commercial conglomerates, which brought new capital and direction. The Sfakianakis Group first participated in a capital increase in March 2002, beginning an ownership stake that would grow over the following fifteen years. Between 2006 and 2010, Speedex executed an aggressive domestic expansion through a franchise model adopted in 2004, building a network of 200 autonomous shops and service points across the country. In September 2017, the company implemented an Integrated Management System incorporating environmental and occupational health and safety standards under ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. The Sfakianakis Group completed full acquisition in December 2017 by purchasing all shares previously held by Fourlis SA.

  • Founded: 1986, as a limited liability company in Greece, recognized as the country's first organized private courier service
  • Headquarters: Athens, Greece
  • Parent company: Sfakianakis Group of Companies, full subsidiary since December 2017
  • Annual deliveries: Approximately 7 million shipments per year
  • Domestic network: 200 distribution centers and service points covering all regions of Greece
  • International reach: More than 220 countries and approximately 14,000 destinations worldwide
  • Quality certifications: ISO 9001:2008 (first in the Greek courier industry, awarded July 2001), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety)
  • International partners: DPD for European road transport, DHL for global coverage

Speedex's standing in the Greek market is built on nearly four decades of domestic operations and a franchise network that extends its geographic reach well beyond what a centrally operated courier could sustain alone. The company serves both individual consumers and business clients across a wide range of service tiers, from standard domestic parcels and documents to cash on delivery shipments, bulky freight, and e-commerce integrations. Through its international carrier partnerships, Speedex connects Greek businesses and consumers to a worldwide shipping network without requiring separate carrier arrangements for foreign destinations.

Which countries does Speedex deliver to?

Speedex covers the full extent of Greek territory for domestic shipments, serving all regions of mainland Greece along with both the Aegean and Ionian island chains. Island deliveries may take slightly longer than mainland shipments due to the maritime transport legs involved in reaching more remote destinations, but the company maintains regional agencies and agents across the island network to handle last-mile delivery. This domestic coverage represents one of the broadest courier footprints in Greece, reaching rural towns, provincial centers, and major urban areas across the country.

Beyond mainland Greece, Speedex operates a dedicated service corridor to Cyprus through a maritime shipping arrangement. Outbound shipments depart from the Port of Piraeus in Athens and arrive at the Port of Limassol, with door-to-door transport completing the connection on both ends of the route. The reverse direction, from Cyprus to Greece, is also supported, with freight charges on that leg applied to the recipient rather than the sender. This Greece-Cyprus corridor is an important part of Speedex's near-international operations, reflecting the strong commercial and cultural ties between the two countries and the frequency of shipments moving between them.

For European destinations beyond Cyprus, Speedex routes through its partnership with DPD, one of the largest European road transport networks, which provides express and economy services across EU member states and other European countries. Time-guaranteed next-day options are available on certain high-priority routes to major European cities. For destinations outside Europe, Speedex works with DHL and other global carriers to extend its reach to more than 220 countries, covering North America, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and other regions globally.

  • Greece (domestic): All regions of mainland Greece, the Aegean islands, and the Ionian islands, including remote locations served through regional agents
  • Cyprus: Door-to-door service via maritime transport between the Port of Piraeus and the Port of Limassol, available in both directions
  • Europe: All major European countries through the DPD partnership, including EU member states, the United Kingdom, and other European nations
  • North America: United States, Canada, and other North American destinations via global carrier partnerships
  • Asia Pacific: Major markets across Asia and the Pacific region through DHL and partner networks
  • Middle East and Africa: Key destinations across the Middle East and the African continent via global carrier partnerships
  • Worldwide total: More than 220 countries and approximately 14,000 destinations globally

International shipments handled by Speedex are transferred to partner carrier networks once they exit Greek territory, meaning the final delivery in the destination country is completed by the local partner rather than Speedex directly. For European shipments this is the DPD local partner network. For worldwide shipments, DHL's global infrastructure manages the receiving end. The Cyprus route remains the exception to this arrangement, as Speedex maintains direct control over both the outbound and inbound ends of that specific corridor given its operational presence in both countries.

What are the Speedex services and delivery times?

Speedex offers a range of domestic and international services covering different shipment types, urgency levels, and budget requirements. The core domestic offering is an express courier service that handles envelopes, documents, and parcels of varying sizes, with delivery typically completed within 1 to 3 business days depending on the origin and destination within Greece. Shipments between major urban centers, such as Athens and Thessaloniki, are generally handled on a next-day basis. Deliveries to remote areas, smaller islands, or less accessible locations may require additional time beyond the standard window, as island-bound shipments rely on maritime connections that add transit time to the overall journey.

  • Domestic express: Express courier service covering all of Greece for envelopes, documents, and parcels, with 1-3 business day delivery and next-day service between major urban centers
  • Same-day delivery: Available in select major urban areas, primarily Athens and other metropolitan centers with sufficient intra-city courier infrastructure
  • Weekend delivery: Optional Saturday and Sunday delivery available across the network, offering flexibility beyond the standard Monday-to-Friday delivery schedule
  • Cash on delivery (COD): The courier collects payment in cash or by check from the recipient at the point of delivery and attributes the collected amount back to the sender
  • Return services: Return of signed documents, protocol numbers, or other supporting paperwork from the recipient back to the original sender as an add-on to the delivery service
  • Bulky item handling: Specialized logistics for oversized or heavy shipments exceeding standard parcel dimensions, covering goods such as furniture, appliances, and other large items
  • International express (Europe): Next-day delivery to major European cities through the DPD partnership, with time-guaranteed options available by 9:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. on certain high-priority routes
  • International economy (Europe): A lower-cost tier for European destinations through DPD, with longer transit windows suited to non-urgent cross-border shipments
  • International worldwide: Service to over 220 countries through DHL and other global carrier partners, available for both documents and parcels with pricing based on the IATA volumetric weight system
  • Warehousing and logistics: Storage and supply chain management services for business clients requiring inventory handling beyond pure courier operations
  • E-commerce integration: A dedicated WooCommerce plugin allowing online merchants in Greece to create, print, cancel, and track Speedex shipping vouchers directly from their WordPress dashboard

The cash on delivery service is a particularly important component of Speedex's domestic offering in the context of the Greek e-commerce market where COD remains a prevalent payment preference among online shoppers. Under this service, the courier collects the payment owed at the door and returns it to the sender, with an additional charge applied per COD shipment beyond the base courier rate. This model requires a high degree of coordination between the courier network and the business sender, and Speedex has built the necessary procedures and financial settlement processes to support it across its franchise network at scale.

For international express shipments to European destinations, Speedex routes through the DPD network and can provide guaranteed delivery times to major city pairs, including next-morning options for time-sensitive business shipments. Transit times for non-European destinations vary considerably by country and service tier, as these shipments depend on DHL's global routing and local customs processing at the destination end. Customers shipping to distant international destinations are advised to verify routing estimates for their specific country before selecting a service level.

What are the Speedex rates and maximum dimensions accepted?

Speedex calculates shipping charges using the volumetric weight system adopted as standard by the International Air Transport Association. Under this system, the volumetric weight of a shipment is derived from its physical dimensions and then compared against the actual weight of the package. Whichever figure is greater is used as the basis for the final charge. This approach is standard practice among express couriers and accounts for the space that large but light packages occupy in transit vehicles and aircraft relative to their actual mass.

The volumetric weight formula applied by Speedex divides the product of a package's length, width, and height by a set divisor. For standard mode the divisor is 5,000, and for freight mode the divisor is 6,000, with the result expressed in kilograms. As a practical example, a parcel measuring 50 cm by 40 cm by 30 cm would have a volumetric weight of 12 kg under standard mode. If the actual weight of that parcel falls below 12 kg, the volumetric figure is used for pricing. If the actual weight exceeds the volumetric equivalent, the actual weight determines the charge instead.

  • Volumetric weight formula: Length x Width x Height divided by 5,000 (standard mode) or 6,000 (freight mode), producing a weight equivalent in kilograms
  • Maximum weight per shipment: 31.5 kg for standard services, with up to 35 kg accepted for certain service types
  • Maximum combined dimension: The sum of length plus twice the width plus twice the height must not exceed 300 cm total
  • Maximum height: 175 cm per shipment
  • Minimum package dimensions: 22.9 cm x 16.2 cm
  • Cash on delivery surcharge: An additional fee is applied per COD shipment on top of the standard base courier rate
  • Rate quotes: Available through the Speedex website or at any of the 200-plus service point locations nationwide

Packages falling outside the standard dimensional limits may still be eligible for transport under Speedex's bulky item handling service, which is specifically designed for oversized goods that cannot be accommodated within the standard parcel parameters. The rates and conditions for bulky shipments are assessed on an individual basis. For all other service tiers, pricing is weight-and-dimension-based, calculated after comparing actual and volumetric weights and applying the applicable per-kilogram rate for the selected service and destination.

What are the Speedex delivery options?

Home delivery to the recipient's address is Speedex's standard method for domestic shipments, with couriers assigned to residential and commercial addresses across all covered areas. If a recipient is absent at the time of the first delivery attempt, Speedex typically makes additional delivery attempts or leaves a notification instructing the recipient on how to arrange re-delivery or collection from a nearby service point. The franchise service point network provides the main alternative collection channel for packages that cannot be completed at the door on a standard delivery attempt.

  • Home delivery: Direct delivery to the recipient's address as the default option for domestic and international shipments across the Speedex network
  • Re-delivery: Additional delivery attempts following an unsuccessful initial attempt, or a notification left at the address for the recipient to arrange collection
  • Service point collection: Recipients can collect undelivered packages at any of the 200-plus Speedex shops, branches, and franchise service points across Greece
  • Pick-up and delivery points: An additional network of pick-up points providing recipients an alternative to home delivery without requiring a visit to a full service center
  • Signature confirmation: Available for business-to-business shipments and certain service tiers, providing documented proof of receipt at the delivery address
  • Return document service: The signed delivery acknowledgment or protocol number is returned to the original sender as an optional add-on to the standard delivery
  • Cyprus door-to-door: Maritime shipments between Greece and Cyprus include full door-to-door handling on both the sending and receiving end of the route

Speedex's network of over 200 service points spans all major regions of Greece, covering urban centers, provincial towns, and areas across both the mainland and the island chains, making the collection network accessible to a broad portion of the Greek population. For business customers, the signature confirmation and return document options address the need for legally documented proof of delivery, which is particularly relevant for shipments containing contracts, financial paperwork, or other materials requiring formal acknowledgment by the receiving party.

What should I do if my Speedex parcel is lost or damaged?

Each Speedex shipment that does not contain prohibited items is automatically covered by insurance against damage, loss, or destruction from the moment it enters the carrier's network. The default coverage limit is $50 for document shipments and $100 for parcels. Customers who require higher coverage can purchase additional insurance at a cost of 1% of the declared shipment value. For shipments with a declared value above $3,000, the insurance arrangement must be agreed upon individually with Speedex's Insurance Cover Department prior to dispatch.

  • Default coverage for documents: Up to $50 per shipment, automatically included at no extra charge
  • Default coverage for parcels: Up to $100 per shipment, automatically included at no extra charge
  • Additional insurance: Available at 1% of the declared shipment value for items exceeding the default coverage limits
  • High-value shipments: Declared values above $3,000 require prior individual coordination with the Insurance Cover Department before the shipment is tendered
  • Customer service phone: +30 210 3407000
  • Customer Quality department phone: +30 210 3407377, for claims, complaints, and quality-related inquiries
  • Prohibited items: Shipments containing items classified as prohibited under Greek or international postal regulations are excluded from automatic insurance coverage

Customers experiencing issues with a lost or damaged package should contact the Customer Quality department and provide relevant supporting documentation. This typically includes the original shipping voucher, proof of the declared value of the item, and photographs of any visible damage where applicable. For packages purchased through an online retailer, the merchant is generally the first point of contact for raising a claim, as the retailer may handle the carrier dispute on the customer's behalf before any direct escalation to Speedex is required.

Items classified as prohibited under Greek postal regulations and international shipping rules cannot be carried in the Speedex network and are not covered by the automatic insurance. These include illegal substances, weapons and ammunition, counterfeit goods, products from species protected under international wildlife trade conventions, and certain agricultural products. Shippers are responsible for confirming that the contents of their parcels comply with applicable regulations before handing shipments over to Speedex.

Does Speedex handle international shipments and customs formalities?

Speedex routes international shipments through two primary carrier partnerships depending on the destination. For European destinations, the company works through DPD, a major European road transport network, which provides tracked door-to-door delivery with time-guaranteed options available on certain express routes. For destinations outside Europe, Speedex works with DHL and other global carriers to reach over 220 countries and approximately 14,000 destinations across North America, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere. Both channels include automatic insurance coverage for each shipment entered into the network.

For shipments moving between EU member states, customs formalities are minimal under the EU's single market framework, which eliminates import duties on goods traded between member countries. For shipments to non-EU countries, including the United Kingdom following its departure from the EU, customs declarations and import duties may apply. These formalities are handled in coordination with the partner carrier in the destination country, as the local delivery operator is best positioned to manage import requirements on the receiving end.

  • Intra-EU shipments: Minimal customs requirements under EU single market rules, including shipments between Greece and Cyprus given both countries' EU membership
  • Non-EU destinations: Customs declarations and duties applicable, managed through the local partner carrier in the destination country
  • United Kingdom: Post-Brexit customs procedures apply and are handled by the DPD network on the receiving end
  • International charge calculation: Based on the IATA volumetric weight formula (Length x Width x Height divided by 5,000), with the higher of volumetric or actual weight used for billing
  • International insurance: Automatic coverage included with each international shipment through DPD and DHL, with additional coverage available at 1% of the declared value
  • High-value international shipments: Declared values above $3,000 require prior individual arrangement with Speedex's Insurance Cover Department before dispatch
  • Prohibited items internationally: Items banned under Greek or international regulations, including CITES-protected species products, weapons, illegal substances, and counterfeit goods, cannot be shipped and carry no insurance coverage

The Greece-to-Cyprus route operates differently from the rest of Speedex's international portfolio. Physical transport between the two countries relies on maritime shipping between the Port of Piraeus and the Port of Limassol, with door-to-door handling managed by Speedex on both ends. Because both Greece and Cyprus are EU member states, customs formalities on this corridor are simplified compared to shipments bound for non-EU destinations. The reverse route, from Cyprus to Greece, is available as well, with freight charges on that direction billed to the recipient on delivery.

Understanding tracking statuses

When tracking a Speedex shipment, each parcel is identified by a unique 12-digit numeric voucher number assigned at the time of shipment creation. This number must be entered exactly as issued, without spaces, letters, or hyphens, to retrieve accurate tracking information. Third-party tracking platforms also support Speedex voucher numbers for customers who prefer to monitor shipments outside the carrier's own tracking interface. The statuses below represent the main events that may appear during the tracking process and explain what each one indicates about the parcel's position and current state in the network.

Status Description
In Transit The parcel is actively moving through the Speedex delivery network on its way to the destination. This status can appear multiple times as the shipment passes through sorting hubs and regional depots along the route, each scan generating a new instance of this event.
Out for Delivery The parcel has left the local Speedex depot and has been loaded onto a courier vehicle for delivery to the recipient's address on that day. Recipients can expect a delivery attempt during the working hours of the local depot handling their area.
Delivered The parcel has been successfully handed over to the recipient at the delivery address. Delivery is typically confirmed by signature or another form of acknowledgment depending on the service tier selected at the time of shipment creation.
Pending The next stage in the delivery chain has not yet scanned the package into its system. This status may appear when a parcel transitions between legs of its journey or arrives at an intermediate transit point awaiting the next scan event. It does not indicate a problem with the shipment itself.
Record Not Found No tracking information is available for the entered voucher number. This can result from an incorrectly entered tracking number, a shipment not yet physically registered in the Speedex system (tracking data can take 12 to 24 hours to appear after booking), or a shipment whose active tracking record has expired.

For island-bound domestic shipments, tracking updates during the maritime transport leg are often sparse or absent until the parcel arrives at the local island agency and is scanned into the last-mile delivery system. This gap in intermediate updates is a normal characteristic of shipments transiting via ferry connections and does not indicate any issue with the package's progress through the network. Once the parcel reaches the island agency, tracking events resume with the standard scan sequence through to final delivery.

Where can I find my Speedex tracking number?

The Speedex tracking number is automatically sent when your package is shipped. As the recipient, you receive it by email, SMS, or directly on the order confirmation page of the retailer's website.

If you cannot find it in your notifications, log in to your customer account on the website where you placed your order. The tracking number can be found in your order history or in the section dedicated to ongoing deliveries.

Once you have this number, enter it in the search field to check your delivery progress and estimated arrival date.

Why isn't my Speedex package moving in the package tracking history?

When your Speedex package tracking hasn't updated for several days, several factors may explain this delay: customs formalities for international shipments, logistical incidents, or simply a delay in updating the information.

Before taking any action, verify that the delivery address provided during the order is correct. An error or incomplete information can slow down the shipping process. If the delay persists beyond the announced timeframe, contact Speedex customer service or the sender with your tracking number on hand. They will be able to precisely locate your package and, if necessary, open an investigation to determine the cause of the delay.

When I track my Speedex package, why does it show as "returned"?

A "returned" status means that the package has been sent back to the sender. Several situations can explain this return:

Incorrect or incomplete address

The delivery driver was unable to identify the recipient due to an incorrect, illegible, or incomplete address missing essential information (apartment number, access code, etc.).

Unsuccessful delivery attempts

After several unsuccessful attempts and in the absence of collection within the allotted time, the package is automatically returned to its origin point.

Unclaimed package

The recipient did not collect the package from the post office or pickup point within the holding period, usually 15 days.

Customs issues

For international shipments, missing or incomplete documents or an incorrect value declaration can result in customs clearance refusal and the return of the package.

If your package shows this status, contact the sender or Speedex customer service to find out the exact reason for the return and agree on a solution: a new shipment or refund according to the seller's terms.

Why does the Speedex parcel tracking timeline indicate that my order cannot be found?

If no information appears when tracking your Speedex package, several causes are possible:

Incorrect tracking number

Make sure that the number entered matches exactly the one provided by the sender. A single character error prevents the package from being identified.

Tracking activation delay

Tracking information is only available once the package has been picked up by Speedex. A delay of 24 to 48 hours may occur between the notification being sent and the first status update.

Technical issue

Temporary malfunctions can sometimes affect the online tracking system. In this case, try again later or contact Speedex customer service for assistance.
